Brief Description
National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), one of the world's largest poverty eradication programs seeks to organize 80-100 million rural women into Self Help Groups (SHGs), over a period of 10 years and continuously nurture and support them through their federation till they attain significant increase in income and improve their quality of life and come out of abject poverty.NRLM especially focuses on women headed households, single women, women victim of trafficking, women with disability and other such vulnerable categories. Self Help Group (SHG), of 10-20 women in general is the primary building block of the NRLM institutional design. The SHGs and their federations play an active role in taking up social issues affecting their members - issues of domestic violence, alcoholism, girl child marriages, etc. This is one of the hallmarks of NRLM. NRLM plans to build the capacities of SHG members on issues such as food security, natural resource management, health, reproductive rights, domestic violence and access to entitlements.
